Drew Echols : Napkin Interview

You played a lot of sports growing up and decided to stick with skateboarding…did you pick the right “sport”?
I think about this pretty regularly. I always wondered if I chose the right direction in life. One thing I like about skateboarding is that having a good time…drinking and smoking is not looked down upon. I am able to be who I am and not be pressured some coach. It’s all about self motivation to push myself forward.
Why do you skate?
Because of the feeling of landing a trick you’ve been trying. It’s better than sex…nah equal. I enjoy working towards something new. Every other sport is based upon doing the same thing over and over. Rather than focusing on doing the same thing better, I like the feeling of change and progression.
What are your thoughts on people and traveling?
Skating is a good enough reason to travel anywhere. (talking about the Surf Expo earlier) I am stoked to go back to Orlando again and meet new people.
What about your skating sets you apart from everyone else?
I think I have a problem with consistency. Some people say I pull things out of my ass all the time. I feel that I have the capability to do more and different tricks than the day before, I just have to want it bad enough.

What is the future like?
No clue…I think handrail days are coming to its end and ledge skating is coming back. Skateboarding is still young and has plenty of room for expansion. As for Tennessee…Nashville, Knocksville, Chattanooga heads, Keegan (Kim), Cam (Cameron Dell), Ryan (Ryan Cooper), Reese (Circa Rep), and KOW are what is bringing this scene up. TN still needs lots of help but TN is TOUGH. WPM!!!
